Dear Robert,

Ever feel like the images of a place are calling you back?  For me, it's India.  For the next couple weeks, there is a $300 discount for Newsletter subscribers or Facebook fans on the October 31, 2009-  India "In the Garden of the Gods" Tour.

We have added a second Laos -"Journey Back in Time" Tour for early December.  Laos is rated the #1 cycling destination in the world by "Ridetheroad.com".

If you are headed to Bike Virginia, send us a digital picture.  We'll post it in a "Friends of Far and Away" section of the website so people will know you are going and you will know who else is going.  It will also get you a complementary Far and Away fanny pack at the event.  We are working on a jersey.  More on that later.

Finally, Chantal has been busy collecting things to auction off for the benefit of the Nepalese Youth Opportunity Foundation.  Be sure to open subsequent Newsletters for information on how to bid.  There are LOTS of hotels and restaurants that have generously contributed to the auction.

Ride Safe!

All the best,

India - "In the Garden of the Gods"
India Kerala
I admit I never expected to be organizing any tours for India.  I thought it would be biking through masses of humanity.  There can be a little bit of that, but we avoid all the big roads and crowds and that makes things surprisingly quiet.

After a couple days on the Malabar Coast, we visit the temples at Madurai before heading north into the Western Ghats.  We then bike up to the hill station of Kodaikanal, which is at 2200 meters.  After that, we descend through Indira Gandhi National Park and tea and spice plantations. Among other places, we stop in Alleppey and have a travelling nite on a houseboat before continuing on to the eclectic coastal town of Kochi, where our tour ends.

If you want to take advantage of our $300 discount offer, please use the registration form at the end of the Newsletter.  The tour is normally $2295 for 14 nights.

Schedule update - 2nd Lao Tour added

We've added a second Laos - "Journey Back in Time Tour".  It starts December 1, 2009.  This one will be led by "Team Australia":  John Fleming and Graeme Watkins.  Both have been to Laos many times.

Lao is a throwback.  It really is a "journey back in time".  It's changing though.  We rather not have anyone who wants to do this one have to wait.  The first tour is full.

Talking Heads - Live!
Joan
As you can see, on a tour, it's not always about riding a bike.

And there is no better way to get a sense of that than to listen to someone who has "been there and done that".

Dan Telep already gave a presentation to his Bike Club (CBBC) on Vietnam/Laos.  Joan Oppel (pictured above) is making a presentation on the same subject to the Oxon Hill Bicycle and Trail Club on March 21 and I'm headed to Richmond to talk to the Richmond Area Bicycle Association about Far and Away on March 11, 2009.  If you are in the neighborhood of a presentation, by all means, drop in!
