CJ Vandevelde out of Giro on 3rd Stage for 2nd year in a row.

CJ VDV is out of the Giro on Stage 3....again!! This shot is from 2009.
I had drafted a post about our favorite American tour rider, CJ Vandevelde being positioned to do some good stuff this year and was about to post it. Before I could click on the “send” button, I saw CJ’s cryptic two word twit “is down” and immediately knew that all could not be well for him at the Giro.
Sure enough, for the second year in a row, CJ has crashed out of the Giro on Day 3.
Last year he broke several ribs and fractured vertebrae in the 3rd stage of the Giro and still came back to place 8th in the Tour d’France.
This year he crashed in the second stage (along with a whole bunch of other people) and then again in today’s third stage.
I take it as a good sign that he managed to tweet even if only two words. We don’t know yet how bad it is. He got up and rode his bike for at least a little distance after the crash before abandoning. If it’s only his collarbone, I guess it’s just another bad day at the office. I’m sure we’ll find out soon.
Training on rollers though is not the same as being in races. Although based on last year’s result anything is possible.

Anyway, we wish him the best, that his injuries are manageable and that he fully recovers as fast as possible.
