Bike for Sikkim?

by Robert Thompson on Feb.26, 2009, under Guestbook

I’m not quite sure what to take.  Normally, I’d take my 25 year old Specialized Rockhopper.  It takes panniers and is already beat to hell.  It doesn’t fold up though so it is subject to potential airline charges.  The other option is my travel bike.  It would be more convenient as far as taking it with.  It’s an 18 year old Schwinn Paramount.  I’d have to use clips for the panniers on it.  The bigger problem is that the fork won’t accept wider tires.  I think for sure, I’d need to replace the fork so I could put wider tires on.  There is a double crank on it too.  That probably should go as well.  The roads in Sikkim are not likely to be that great and the bike will be loaded up.  Decisions!  Decisions!

Maybe it’s time for a new bike….something like a Surly Traveler’s Check.  It’s a grand for the frameset.  I’d like to get a new camera too!!!!

Sikkim is here

by Robert Thompson on Feb.23, 2009, under Guestbook

Tiny Sikkim (only 115k long and 65k wide) was a Monarchy until officially incorporated as the 22nd state of India in 1975.  It’s in the Himalayas but the climate ranges from tropical to alpine.  The highest peak is Mt.Kanchendzonga, the 3rd highest mountain in the world at 28,156 feet.  There are 9 mountains over 20,000 feet and 8 glaciers in Sikkim.

The original inhabitants, the Lepcha, number about 50,000 and speak their own language.  Lepcha script can still be found today in some newspapers: Lepcha Script Sikkim - Cycling India

The Lepchas called Sikkim  “Nye-mae-el”  or “Paradise”.

It’s a great world we live in!

We are headed to Richmond to speak to RABA on March 11, 2009. Spring is a great time to start thinking about your adventure plans.

We will share some stories and lots of great pictures and a few short movies to get the ideas flowing. We LOVE talking to people about all the places we have been to.

We’ll bring some Far and Away stuff to raffle off.
